Winter Lawn Care: What Should I Be Doing during the Winter Months?

December 2, 2020 By Tim Boyd

When you think of winter lawn care, fungicide is likely the last thing that comes to mind. The winter months mean cold weather, slow or no grass growth, and a break from many winter lawn care tasks. It might not make any logical sense to worry about a fungal problem in your lawn during the winter.

With proper care, cold season grasses like fescue can easily fight off fungal infections. It’s far better to prevent a fungus problem from starting than to rely on fungicide to get rid of the fungus. Following a simple and straightforward lawn care plan can help you to avoid fungal issues in your lawn all year.

Here are a few expert winter lawn care tips to help you prevent the need for fungicide treatments for your turf:

Fertilize Appropriately

Fertilize your fescue lawn with mirco-nutrients at the appropriate intervals. It’s the surest way to get your turf the nutrients it needs for proper growth and function. A lawn care professional can assess your lawn and tell you when you should fertilize it, and which products will work best.

Maintain a Proper Watering Schedule

In the winter, Atlanta’s lawns don’t require much water. But each lawn, each microclimate creates unique conditions that can have far different requirements than the norm. A landscaping expert can easily tell you what kind of watering schedule you should use for your lawn at various times of the year. Standing water is a no-no because it encourages mold, fungus, and other problems. Try aerating the soil to improve drainage, and consider altering the contours of your property if the problem persists.

Aerate Soil Periodically

When soil is aerated, the flow of water, air, and nutrients to grass roots will be improved, which helps each grass plant stay healthy and strong. Aeration keeps your soil from getting compacted.

Keep the Grass Trimmed

Keep the grass trimmed to the appropriate height throughout the year. Also, avoid cutting off more than a third of the total blade length in one mowing. In late fall, the last mowing of the season should be a little lower than normal. Grass overwinters better when it’s cut short.

For more than three decades, Kemko Lawn and Shrub has helped Atlanta’s homeowners create the gorgeous lawns that make neighbors jealous. We know the time, materials, and care it takes to get the job done. And, we can keep lawns healthy all year long. Our experienced crews can assess any lawn concern or grass condition and recommend a plan of action to resolve the problem.

Winter Lawn Care Is Important

Proper care is the key to preventing fungus problems. Kemko can help you ensure your grass is healthy and green, even in the winter.
