Dollar spot is a common problem on most warm season turf grasses grown in Georgia mainly affecting Bermuda and Zoysia lawns. Dollar spot results in the formation of small, silver dollar sized, circular, bleached patches in the lawn. Most spots are only a few inches in diameter but can exceed that and, with time, will coalesce into large irregular dead areas. Ignored they can substantially damage the lawn.

Symtoms

The fungus that causes dollar spot survives indefinitely in thatch and soil, it can never truly be eliminated from the environment. In the presence of a thin film of moisture on leaves and favorable temperatures, the fungus will begin to grow and infect leaves. The fungus itself can be spotted in the early morning dew in patches that resemble spider webs, closer inspection will reveal a cottony growth of mycelium. This is not a reliable diagnostic feature as they can be confused with actual spider webs which are also common in the lawn. Dollar spot is most severe in late spring and early summer and it can occur throughout the summer months.

Management

There are several environmental conditions that are beyond your control which serve to promote dollar spot. The main contributing factors are heat and overnight moisture and humidity. Poor air circulation due to a fence or forested perimeter can sometimes create a stagnant environment ideal for the fungus. In many cases the fungus can be controlled without the use of fungicide by having proper lawn practices.

In an ideal environment the fertilizer applied to the lawn would keep the grass growing fast enough for you to mow the affected portion away. It can sometimes be controlled in this manner. Most environments, unfortunately, are much less than ideal and the fungus may still occur regardless of soil fertility and management. However, by following these steps it is possible to remove or reduce the severity of the problem. The first step, is to have proper mowing and watering habits. Mow every week of the growing season. This will minimize mower burn which is a easy pathway to infection on the weakened plant and the most common source of severe damage. Water regularly and deeply. Especially do this during drought and high temperatures which automatically stress the grass, also increasing chance of infection. Core aerate if your lawn is compacted or on a slope. Poor water penetration will limit growth, increase drought stress, and reduce the effects of the fertilizer we apply. Lastly, contact Kemko Lawn Service if you notice a problem, we can address the problem and begin steps to treat it.

Fungicide is always available in single treatments but is now also available as a repeating four service program for customers who want to minimize or prevent fungus damage. The earlier we can treat it the less damage it can do.
